Nikkei staff writer Cliff Venzon reports on Philippine President Rodrigo Duterte's controversial trip to China, during which the leader announced an economic and diplomatic separation from the United States. Duterte later clarified, saying that he was advocating a "separation of foreign policy" rather than "a severance of ties."

Following a meeting with Chinese President Xi Jinping, the two leaders signed 13 memorandums of understanding on subjects including infrastructure investment and maritime cooperation. The Philippines secured $24 billion in credits and investments, including $15 billion in project commitments.

The two countries also released a joint statement announcing their intention to settle territorial disputes through bilateral talks.
