Description

This project is one piece of a 1.28 billion dollar multi-part project to connect Paira Port to Bhanga via Barisal. This railway line from Paira Port to Barisal will be one of two projects, the second one will be a line from Barisal to Bhanga. Through Bhanga, Paira port will be connected to the broader Bangladeshi railroad network. An additional railway connection in the works will link Paira Port's railway to the Padma Bridge, which will tie this project into the region's broader infrastructure connectivity vision and reduce the travel time between Bhanga and the capital of Dhaka by 3 hours, according to Bangladesh Railways.

In May 2015, China Civil Engineering Construction Company signed a MoU for the Bhanga-Barisal rail line construction and a feasibility study on the proposed route, which was taken up in 2016 by the Ministry of Railways. By September 2017, the feasibility study was underway.
