Description

This project constituted the first phase of the World Bank's efforts to support the modernization of Azerbaijan's road sector. It rehabilitated the 106-kilometer Ganja-Gazakh section of Azerbaijan's East-West transport corridor, reducing travel time along the road section by 33%. The project has helped stimulate trade and business along the renovated road and has increased the international transit role of the region. The initial project envisioned a $40 million commitment from the World Bank, $6.5 million commitment from the government of Azerbaijan, and $1.5 million commitment from the European Commission, with completion planned for 2005. However, the decision to include a bypass road around the city of Torvuz in March 2005 significantly increased the costs and time frame of the project.
