This project entails the construction of a new double electrified track railway (220 kilometers) parallel with Route 9 road in Savannakhet, including all necessary facilities from Savannakhet to Lao Bao (Lao-Vietnam Border) through Savannakhet Province. It is the first double-line electrified railway with 1.435mm standard gauge in Laos will play a key role in the planned 2500km national railway network. The project is also a part of the international “East West Economic Corridor (EWEC).”
In 2013, Malaysia-based Giant Consolidated Limited created Giant Rail Company Limited, which the Lao government owns shares in, as the project concessionaire company. The company has obtained the rights to Design, Built, Finance, Operate and Transfer (DBFOT) the railway. The project is expected to be completed in 2020.
